This course will focus on ancient metal, terra-cotta sculptures, and stone sculptures produced in the urban center of Ife in Nigeria. The first part of the course will entail an intense study of the history and culture of the Yoruba people and the importance of Ife as the mythical location of the genesis of human life. During the second part of the course, students will work with the instructor to help in curatorial preparation of the show Dynasty and Divinity: Ife Art in Ancient Nigeria at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
