He embarks on a journey to find-what, exactly? . Revenge . Himself . His first love . Home . Salvation . God Each of these answers is correct, yet none is sufficient. The Divine Comedy is a pilgrimage narrative, and, like all pilgrimage narratives, the ultimate goal of spiritual enlightenment is attainable only through physical travel. With Dante, then, we will hike through hell, purgatory, and heaven-but also deep into the world of Medieval Christianity and Medieval Florence, learning something about the people, places, beliefs, and questions that moved the spiritual seekers of the middle ages. |
