Wamidan, Jazz Band to Perform Concert

The Wabash College Jazz Band and Wamidan, the World Music Ensemble, will be sharing the stage in an evening of African and Jazz music and dances.

The concert will be held on Tuesday, November 19 at 8 p.m. in Salter Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Wamidan ensemble will open the first part of the program with songs featuring African flute, harps, log xylophones, drums, and folk dances from the musical cultures of both Ghana (West Africa) and Uganda (East Africa).

Participating in the dances are Montgomery County residents Caity Charles, Lyndsay Gobel, Sarah Handley, Chrissy Stevens, Anna Jean Templeton, Sophia Templeton, Darby Truax and sophomore student Julian Moreaux. Wamidan is directed by James Makubuya.

In the second part of the program, the Jazz Band will be performing a series of blues compositions ranging from Duke Ellington's Azure, Oscar Pettiford's Blues In The Closet and the 1960s top 40 hit, Swinging Shepherds Blues. The Jazz Band is directed by John Hill.

Both ensembles will take the stage for a finale featuring Dizzy Gillespie's A Night in Tunisia.

Admission to the concert is free. The public is cordially invited.
