Three Named Wabash College Lilly Scholars

Spencer Peters, Brookston, Francisco Huerta, Chicago, and Adam Barnes, Bradford, Pa., have received Lilly Scholar honors from Wabash College. The three members of the Class of 2014 will receive full tuition and room/board support during their four years at the College. The four-year scholarship is valued at $170,000.

Peters is a senior at Frontier High School. He is a three-year member of the National Honor society and attended Boys State. He served as senior class vice president and was a football team captain.

Huerta, a senior at Rauner College Prep School in Chicago, is a National Honor Society member, senior class student council representative, and a captain of the school’s robotics team. Huerta was a founding member of the soccer team and a four year member.

Barnes will be the Bradford Area High School Valedictorian. He has served as president of the school’s National Honor Society Chapter, captain of the Cross Country team, and captain of his YMCA swim team.

To be eligible for a Lilly award, applicants must meet the minimum standards of:

-          a GPA of 3.5 (4.0 scale)

-          Rank in the top 20 percent of their senior class

-          an SAT score of at least 1720 (reading, math, writing), or an ACT composite of at least 25

The three winners joined 27 other high school seniors, from 11 states, on campus April 16 and 17 for Lilly Weekend. The students participated in small group interviews and a larger classroom type of discussion during the weekend.

Besides academic achievement, the College seeks young men with individual accomplishments, abilities, extracurricular activities, and a demonstrated level of leadership.
