Healy Advances to Nationals as Wabash Takes Third at Wrestling Regionals

Two second-place finishes and four third-place finishes in the individual weight classes led the Wabash College wrestling team to a third-place team finish at Saturday’s NCAA Division III Midwest Wrestling Regional, hosted by Case Western Reserve University. Sophomores Phu Hong (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) and Healy captured second-place finishes in their weight classes. Hong cruised to a 20-7 victory in his opening match at 125 pounds before losing in the championship match 13-6 to Nick Iannerelli of Manchester. Healy pinned Illinois College’s Mike Dowey in 2:15 in his first match at 174 pounds. Healy took an 11-8 victory over Jeremy Mosier of Millikin in the semifinals to advance to the championship match against Manchester’s J.J Davis. Davis came away with a hard-fought 5-4 win over Healy, earning the Wabash wrestler a second-place finish at 174 pounds.

Junior Reece Collins (Princeton, IN/Princeton) was the first of four Little Giants to claim third-place Regional honors. Collins finished the tournament with a three consecutive wins after losing his opening match, including a 4-2 win in the third-place finals contest. Freshman Kevin Meyer (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) took third place at 165 pounds, winning his last three matches of the day, as well.

Seniors Logan Kuhne (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop) and Joe Scanlon (Lafayette, IN/McCutcheon) also grabbed third-place finishes. Kuhne took third at 197 pounds with a weekend record of 3-1. Scanlon got revenge in his third-place championship match. His only loss of the weekend came by a 4-2 loss to Ryan Tiseo of Olivet College. The two grapplers met in the third-place match with Scanlon coming up with a pin of Tiseo at 2:59.

Sophomore Adam Miller (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) captured fourth place at 157 pounds. Freshman Joe Seger (Jasper, IN/Jasper) took fifth place at 184 pounds.

The Little Giants finished with 99-1/2 points. Manchester won the team title with 111 points. Olivet College was second with 107 points.
