Three Grapplers Earn Midstates Conference Titles

Three Wabash College wrestlers earned conference titles at the 2003 Midstates Conference Wrestling Tournament, held Saturday at Manchester College.

Sophomores Phu Hong (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) and Chris Healy (Jasper, IN/Jasper), along with junior Reece Collins (Princeton, IN/Princeton), claimed top honors in their individual weight classes.

Hong entered the one-day competition as the number two seed, advancing to the championship match at 125 pounds with an 11-5 decision over Mike Olem of Waynesburg. Hong won the championship with a 10-6 victory over fourth-seeded Joe Suchowolec from Olivet.

Collins was also a two-seed at 133 pounds, moving into the finals of the bracket with an 8-4 win over Olivet's Shawn Parker. Collins dominated the championship match, taking a 13-3 major decision over Joe Lamplot from Manchester.

Healy continued his winning ways in Saturday's meet. He opened the competition with a pin, then claimed a 6-2 victory in his second match. Healy took the 174-pound title with a 14-2 major decision over JJ Davis from Manchester.

Freshman Joe Seger (Jasper, IN/Jasper) and senior Logan Kuhne (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop) added second-lace finishes for Wabash. Seger took second at 184 pounds, going undefeated in his first two matches including a 15-3 major decision over third-seeded Jamie Pradora of Waynesburg. Seger defeated the number-two seed, Jason Creager of Olivet, 7-5 in the next match before losing in the championship match to the top-seeded wrestler, Paul Sorenson of Manchester.

Kuhne entered the competition as the two-seed at 197 pounds. He won his first two matches, including a pin of number three seed Tom Aigner 4:30 into the second match. Kuhne lost in the championship match to the number one seed, Justin Torres of Olivet.

Senior Joe Scanlon (Lafayette, IN/McCutcheon) and sophomore Mark Dietzen (Elmhurst, IL/York Community) added third-place finishes for the Little Giants. Scanlon went 2-1 for the day to take third at heavyweight, including a victory by pin in the third-place championship match. Dietzen defeated teammate Kevin Meyer (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) 11-5 to take third at 165 pounds. Dietzen opened the day with an 18-3 win over fourth-seeded John Maybury of Waynesburg before losing to the number one seeded wrestler in his next match. Dietzen came back with an 11-9 victory in the consolation bracket to setup the match against Meyer.

Meyer defeated the third-seed wrestler at 165 pounds 17-3 before losing to the two-seed in the second match of the day. He came back with a 7-2 win in the consolation bracket before meeting Dietzen in the final match.

Wabash finished third overall in the team competition. The Little Giants finished with 111.5 points. Manchester won the team title with 171 points, followed by Olivet in second with 138.5 points. Mount St. Joseph (59), Waynesburg (56.5), Rose-Hulman (31), MacMurray (11), and Illinois College (0) rounded out the team scoring.
