Poor Shooting Haunts Wabash in Loss at OWU

The Wabash basketball team’s shooting woes continued on Wednesday night. The Little Giants shot just 34-percent against Ohio Wesleyan, putting Wabash on the short end of a 77-53 loss to the Battling Bishops at Delaware, Ohio.

Wabash saw a career-best 21 points from Eric Buck go by the wayside. The Little Giants could not keep the Bishops from pounding the ball inside, shooting 57-percent and scoring 36 points in the paint. Travis Schwab came into the night as the leading scorer in the North Coast Athletic Conference, and that continued as the junior center led the Bishops with 24 points. Four Bishops hit double figures in the contest – Charlie Smith with 16 points, Brandon Cole with 15, and Ross Rybarczyk with 11.

The Little Giants’ leading scorers – Joe DesJean and Brady Claxton – were stifled from the field for the second time in two weeks. DesJean was held nearly 10 points under his scoring average, finishing the game with nine points. Claxton was held to 8 points after entering the contest averaging over 15 points a game.

Wabash led in the early going, but saw the Bishops push out in front midway through the first half, finally taking a 20-point halftime lead.

Wabash cut that lead to 14 early in the second period, eventually dropping the Ohio Wesleyan advantage to nine before the Bishops made another scoring run to go back in front by 19.

Wabash falls to 12-5 with the loss, 6-3 in the NCAC. The Battling Bishops draw even with the Little Giants in the conference standings at 6-3 and move to 10-8 overall.

Wabash continues its road swing on Saturday, traveling to Granville, Ohio to play the Denison Big Red at 3 p.m.
