Senior Night Starts Hot, End Cold as Wabash Falls to DePauw in the Pool

Wabash tied for first place in the opening event of Friday night's dual meet versus DePauw to take an early lead, only to the Tigers' depth take control. The Little Giants lost to DePauw 145-98 at the Class of 1950 Natatorium on Friday evening.

The meet with the seniors from both teams being recognized for their contributions to their respective teams. Wabash seniors Dennis Bowers (Seymour, IN/Seymour), Nick Collins (Michigantown, IN/Clinton Central), Karl Grimmer (Griffith, IN/Griffith), and Jeremy Fackenthal (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) entered the meet with a 22-5 dual meet record in their four-year careers as Little Giants.

Wabash got off to a great start in the 400-yard medley relay. Both Little Giant relay teams tied for first place, touching the pad at 3:40.59. Bowers, Ben Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove), Brandon Peacock (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville), and Michael Brickman (Richmond Heights, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin School) led the "B" relay team. Matthew Perkins (Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg), Colin Fahey (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard), Brett Findley (Bargersville, IN/Franklin Community), and Jeddah Wegerhoff (Avon, IN/Avon) earned the tie for the "A" relay team.

The Little Giants added another first-place finish in the next event, the 1000-yard freestyle. Collins took first place, swimming the distance in 10:10.02. Freshman Jason Patrick Thompson (Seymour, IN/Seymour) added a third-place finish to put the Little Ginats in front after two events.

DePauw answered by taking the top-two places in the 200-yard freestyle and first place in the 50 free. Brickman took second in the 50, finishing in 22.99 to earn four points for the Little Giants. Hewitt was second in the 200-yard individual medley, but surrounded by Tiger swimmers in first and third.

DePauw swept the top-three places in the one-meter diving event before Collins rallied Wabash with another first-place finish. The senior touched first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.67). Findley would add a first-place finish in the 500-yard free (4:54.67), and Hewitt took first-place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.64). But Wabash could not overcome the Tigers' depth. DePauw took all five scoring positions on the three-meter board and finished first and third in the 400-yard free relay to hand the Little Giants the loss.

Wabash will jump back into the water on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Washington University of St. Louis
