Swimmers Take Third at DPU Invitational

The Wabash swimmers took third place over the weekend at the 2002 DePauw University Invitational. The Little Giants finished with 584 points, including a first place finish by junior Brett Findley (Bargersville, IN/Franklin Community.

Findley took first in the 200 butterfly, just missing the national qualifying cut by 1.5 seconds. The junior touched first in the finals with a time of 1:56.68. Findley also swam a lifetime best in the 500 freestyle, finishing in fourth place with a time of 4:54.64. Senior Nick Collins (Michigantown, IN/Clinton Central) was fifth in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.81.

Freshman Matt Perkins (Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg) earned two second-place finishes for Wabash. Perkins was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:57.80), trimming four seconds off of his preliminary time. Perkins also took second in the 100-yard backstroke (54.50).

Wabash added three second-place finishes in the relays. The team of Dennis Bowers (Seymour, IN/Seymour), Findley, Perkins, and Collins took second in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Perkins, Findley, Colin Fahey (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard), and Brandon Peacock (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) were second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:36.68). Perkins, Fahey, and Peacock combine with Steve Birrer (Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg) to take second place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.27).

The Little Giants also grabbed four third-place finishes. Ben Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) took third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.75). Fahey was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.51). The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Fahey, Birrer, Peacock, and Michael Brickman (Richmond Heights, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin School) took third with a time of 1:28.43, while Fahey, Peacock, Perkins, and Birrer combined for a third-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:15.73).

Washington University won the meet with 1,067 points. DePauw was second with 628. Wabash was followed by Wittenberg with 377 points. Rose-Hulman (341 points), Alma (195), Illinois Wesleyan (184), Baldwin-Wallace (136), and Rhodes (28) rounded out the scoring.
