Two Second-Half Goals Give Wabash a 2-1 Win

A good defensive effort in net and two goals in the final 20 minutes led to a 2-1 win for the Wabash soccer team over Millikin University on Wednesday night.

The Little Giants kept the the Big Blue from attacking offensively in the first half, allowing only two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. Millikin took the lead with the first goal of the match, however, in the 62nd minute on an unassisted goal by tony Douglass.

Trailing 1-0, sophomore Colin Smith (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) blasted a shot from 30 yards out to even the score at 1-1. The tie lasted another five minutes before freshman Jeff Diebel (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead)fired home the game winner in the 76th minute on a pass from fellow freshman Adam Wynn (Grapevine, TX/Colleyville Heritage).

Millikin outshot the Little Giants 18-16, but Wabash managed to put more shots on target. The Little Giants had 11 shots on goal, while Millikin managed 10.

Senior Graham Bailey (Evansville, IN/Evansville North) held onto a shutout in the first half of the match. Sophomore netminder John Taggart (Carmel, IN/Hampton Roads Academy) played the 45 minutes of the second half, making seven saves to split the victory with Bailey.

Senior forward Carlos Aguirre (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) led the team in shots with five and shots on goal with four. Freshman Aaron Kunkle (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) had three shots on goal for the Little Giants.

The win gives Wabash a 2-1 record for the season. The Little Giants will travel to Alma, Michigan this weekend to play in the Scotland Yard Soccer Classic. Wabash opens the classic with a 2 p.m. match against host Alma on Saturday.
