Little Giants Drop Doubleheader to Wittenberg

A rain-shortened afternoon turned even darker for the Wabash baseball as its opportunity to play in the North Coast Athletic Conference baseball tournament disappeared with a doubleheader loss to Wittenberg University. The Tigers defeated Wabash 9-4 in the first game, then took a 4-0 victory in a five-inning affair that was shortned due to rain.

The Little Giants started the scoring in the first game in the third inning. Senior co-captain Bryson Renbarger (Converse, IN/Eastern), playing in his final game at Mud Hollow Field, slammed a two-out double to set the table for freshman Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg), who singled down the left field line to give the Little Giants a 1-0 lead as Renbarger raced home.

The lead was short-lived, however. The Tigers put three runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning, followed by a six-run tally over the next three innings to take a 9-1 edge.

The Little Giants came back with three runs in the ninth when junior Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) brought home Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) on a ground ball to third. Knott reached on an errant throw and scored on a Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) double. Junior Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) added an RBI single, scoring Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) to cut the lead to five runs. But the Wabash rally fell short, eliminating any chance of advancing to the conference post-season tournament.

Wittenberg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the second game, then scored an additional three runs in the fourth inning. After completing five innings and starting the sixth, flashes of lightning brought a halt to the game. After a thirty-minute delay, the game was called with the Tigers leading 4-0.

Mack, Martin, and Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) each tallied two hits in game one. Wabash managed just four hits in the second game. Freshman Jason Jablonski (Poland, OH/Cardinal Mooney was 2-for-2 to lead the Little Giants.

Wabash moves to 15-22 with the losses, 2-7 in the NCAC Western Division. The Little Giants will try to get back on the winning track in the final three-game series of the season this weekend at Earlham College.
