Little Giants Finish 2-2 at Denison Baseball Tournament

The Wabash College baseball team split doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, finishing 2-2 at the Denison University Baseball Tournament over the weekend.

The Little Giants opened play on Saturday with a 19-0 victory over Lake Erie College. Sophomore Scott Riley (Portage, IN/Portage) earned his first win in a Wabash uniform, pitching seven innings of shutout baseball. He scattered nine hits and struck out 10 to earn the victory.

Wabash lost the second game on Saturday to eventual tournament champion Baldwin-Wallace. A five-run fourth inning for Baldwin-Wallace led to an eventual 15-4 victory for the Yellow Jackets. The Little Gaints scratched out seven hits in the game, but committed five errors. Freshman shortstop Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) playing for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury in Florida, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the loss.

Wabash split with Heidelberg College on Sunday. The Little Giants claimed a 5-3 win in eight innings in the first contest before losing 8-0 in the second game. Junior pitcher Milton Neuenschwander (Berne, IN/South Adams) was a first-time winner on the mound for Wabash. He threw 1-1/3 innings in relief to earn his first college career victory, shutting out The 'Berg while allowing only one walk.

The Little Giants scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning when senior Bryson Renbarger (Converse, IN/Eastern) was hit by a pitch, then freshman Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) drew a walk. Both came around to score on walks to freshmen Jason Jablonski (Poland, OH/Cardinal Mooney) and Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration).

Sophomore Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) led the Little Giants in hitting for the weekend, going 7-for-14 with five runs scored and five RBIs. Schubert was 6-for-13 with seven RBIs. Freshman Justin Bates (Carmel, IN/Carmel) saw his first action of the season after suffering an injury early in the year, going 3-for-7 in three games for Wabash.

The Little Giants move to 12-12 after the four-game set. Wabash will open the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of its season on Thursday with a nine-inning contest against Wittenberg University at 2 p.m. at Mud Hollow Field.
