Injuries Haunt Little Giants in Sunday Split at Franklin

This season the Wabash baseball team may spend more time in the training room than on the baseball diamond. Two more Little Giants were lost to injuries in two games at Franklin College on Sunday. Wabash split the two-game set, defeating Elmhurst 8-6 before losing to Franklin 8-3.

Junior Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) was scheduled to start on the mound for Wabash in the second game against Franklin. Batting second in the lineup for the Little Giants, he was racing down to first base to try and beat out a double-play ball when he stepped on the pitcher's foot while covering first. Martin turned his ankle, suffering a severe sprain and ending his day before he could take his place on the mound. One inning later it was junior Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) who had to come out of the lineup with an knee injury that came on a slide into second base. Neither player is expected to play on Tuesday afternoon against Hanover.

Franklin scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game. Wabash responded with two runs in the top of the second, only to see the Grizzlies plate three runners in the third. Freshman Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) replaced Martin in the batting order, going 2-for-2 with a double. Senior Bryson Renbarger (Converse, IN/Eastern) continued to wield a hot bat, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Renbarger is batting .434 for the season and leads the team with 23 hits. Freshman Judd Crowgey (Salem, OH/Salem) took the loss for Wabash, his second of the season.

Wabash scored five runs in the first inning against Elmhurst in the first game on Sunday on the way to an 8-6 victory. Renbarger went 3-for-4 against Elmhurst, adding two more RBIs to his season totals. Sophomore outfielder Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke) had two RBIs in the game for the Little Giants. Junior pitcher Marc Rowe (West Point, IN/McCutcheon) struck out six while earning his second win of the season. Crowgey got the last two outs of the game to register his second save of the season.

Wabash still hovers around the .500 mark with a 9-10 overall record. The Little Giants will play Hanover College on Tuesday afternoon at Mud Hollow Field at 3:15 p.m.
