Little Giants Split with Kalamazoo on the Baseball Diamond

Run were as tough to find as a place to stay warm on Saturday afternoon as the Wabash baseball team battled Kalamazoo College and 40-degree weather. The Little Giants lost the opening game 4-0 before taking the second game of the doubleheader 1-0.

Wabash could manage only five hit in 25 at bats in the first game. The defense struggled for the third consecutive game as the Hornets took advantage of three Wabash errors and three wild pitches to win their first game of the season. Wabash freshman Jon Horne (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) was tagged with the loss, working seven innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out six.

The Little Giants bounced back with a win in the second game behind an outstanding performance on the mound by senior co-captain Ben Prickel (Lafayette, IN/Harrison). He threw his first complete game of the season to move to 2-0 with the victory after holding the Hornets to two hits in the contest. Prickel struck out two without allowing a walk.

Wabash scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning when Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) reached second on an error by Kalamazoo's centerfielder. Mack raced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Bryson Renbarger (Converse, IN/Eastern).

The Little Giant managed only three hits in the game. Freshman Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke) was 1-for-2 with two walks to lead Wabash offensively.

Wabash moves to 8-9 with the split. The Little Giants will face Hanover College at Mud Hollow Field on Tuesday, March 19 in a nine-inning contest. The first pitch is slated for 3:15 p.m.
