Thinclads Third at Conference Relays

The Wabash College indoor track and field team took third place at the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Relays, held Saturday at Denison University.

Wabash finished with 61 points. Ohio Wesleyan took first (84 points), with Allegheny capturing second place (70). Denison (41), Wooster (38), Wittenberg (36), Kenyon (27), Earlham (17), Hiram (14), and Oberlin (13) rounded out the scoring at the meet.

Senior Jared Smit (Lafayette, IN/Central Catholic) and junior Mark Sherer (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) combined to take first place in the 5000-meter relay. Smit raced away from field, lapping half the competition on the way to a time of 15:36.46. Sherer crossed the line in 15:54.20 to take second place individually, combining with Smit for a winning time of 31:30.66.

Joe Bombagetti (Crown Point, IN/Crown Point), Ken Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran), Jerome Murray (Lawton, OK/Eisenhower), and Darren Green (Dallas, TX/South Texas HS for Health Professions) took first place in the 4 X 200 relay with a time of 1:34.62. Smit and Sherer joined Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton) and Chris Weitzel (Bringhurst, IN/Carroll) to take second place in the 4 X 800 relay, turning in a time of 8:13.70.

Although the meet comined scores in field events, some Wabash athletes' individual performances were good enough to earn high honors. John Crumpacker (Crawfordsville, IN/Ben Davis) was the only Little Giant entered in the pole vault due to early season injuries. Crumpacker tied with Ohio Wesleyan's Jay Douglas for first place in the individual scoring, clearing 13-feet. Crumpacker's vault was also good enough for second place in the relay scoring. Peter DeYoung (Evansville, IN/Evansville Bosse) fifth in the high jump relay after clearing 6'-06", the second-best individual jump at the meet.

Wabash will host the first indoor track meet in school history on Saturday, February 2 as the Wabash Invitational begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Knowling Fieldhouse.
