Second-Chance Baskets Too Much for Wabash

Second-chance opportunities led to too many scoring chances for Wittenberg on Wednesday night as the 16th-ranked Tigers handed Wabash a 90-69 loss in North Coast Athletic Conference basketball.

Wittenberg scored 23 second-chance points in the game to earn its fifth win of the season and second in conference play. Wabash took a 3-2 lead on a Ryan Short (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) three-pointer to open the game before the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Wittenberg led 47-30 at the half, making 20 field goals while allowing Wabash only 21 shots. The Tigers grabbed nine offensive rebounds, compared to 13 total rebounds for Wabash in the first half.

The inside game of Short and Joe DesJean (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) kept the Little Giants within reach in the first half. Both players scored nine points in the first 20 minutes of play to lead Wabash in scoring.

Wittenberg jumped out to a 19-point lead in the first four minutes of the second half. Wabash battled back to within 14 on several occasions, but could not carve the Tigers’ lead below double figures.

Wittenberg finished 37-of-70 from the field for 53-percent, while Wabash was 20-of-51 for 39-percent. The Tigers had 46 rebounds, 16 coming on the offensive end, versus 25 total rebounds for Wabash.

DesJean led the Wabash effort with 20 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Kip Chase (Bedford, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) added a career-high 14 points, Brady Claxton (Shelbyville, IN/Shelbyville) scored 12 points, , and Short finished with 12 points.

Wabash (2-4, 1-1) will return to Chadwick Court to play Denison University. The NCAC game will tipoff at 3 p.m.
