Course Section Number: | FRT-101-02 |
Department: | Freshman Tutorial |
Description: | Cara Healey teaches Chinese language courses and a variety of Asian Studies courses on history, literature, film, and culture. Her research focuses on Chinese science fiction, and she is an active translator of Chinese literature. In her spare time, Dr. Healey enjoys reading science fiction and fantasy. What can science fiction teach us about our world today? About our past? Our future? This tutorial will explore science fiction's varied potentials: to mirror reality or imagine possibilities, to reinforce norms or challenge assumptions, to interrogate our humanity or marvel at the universe. Through analysis of fiction, film, essays, and other media, we will touch on themes such as space exploration, alien encounters, ecological catastrophe, virtual reality, empire, identity, and more. Students will also create their own work of science fiction in a medium of their choice. |
