Title: Color TV: Black Folk on TV

Description: This course will survey the proliferation of Black representation on television shows with particular focus on the 1970s through 2000s. We will review variety shows like Flip Wilson and Richard Pryor, sitcoms like Amos 'n' Andy and Julia and entertainment shows like Soul Train and In Living Color. Special focus will be devoted to Black family shows like The Jeffersons, Sanford and Sons, The Cosby Show and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Students will be introduced to concepts in cultural theory and cultural criticism. This course will appeal to students interested in the intersection of popular culture and race relations. Caution: We will watch a lot of TV.
