Title: The Black Body
Course Section Number: ENG-370-01
Department: English
Description: ENG-370-01=BLS-270-01 The Black Body is a site of surveillance and violence. It is, also, used to depict both the sacred and profane. Moreover, the Black body signals the erotic and grotesque. How is this possible? We will review the history of sighting, picturing, describing and embodying Blackness. From James Van DerZee's photos of Black life and culture in 1930s Harlem, NY, to Kerry James Marshall's paintings, the goal is to read representations of Blackness as a possible way of understanding what it means to be human.
