Dr. James J. Barnes Awarded Prestigious McLain-McTurnan-Arnold Award

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN — Dr. James J. Barnes, professor of history at Wabash College, was named the winner of the McLain-McTurnan-Arnold Excellence in Teaching Award during an awards program held at the college recently.

A Rhodes Scholar, Barnes has taught history at Wabash College since 1962. He is the author of a number of books, scholarly articles, and reviews. In addition to his professional memberships, Barnes is active in St. John's Church, the Indiana Historical Society, the Montgomery County Historical Society, American Historical Association, and Ski for Light Inc. In 1994, Wabash honored him with the Honorary Alumnus Award.

Dr. Barnes and his wife, Patience, a research associate at Wabash, reside in Crawfordsville and are the parents of two children.

The McLain-McTurnan-Arnold Excellence in Teaching Award has been presented annually at Wabash since 1965. It was made possible by Reid McLain ’27, in memory of his friend Claire McTurnan ’10. In 1984, additional funding was provided by Kent M. Arnold ’29.
