Little Giants Earn First Win

The Wabash College soccer team recorded its first win of the 2000 season on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Albion College as part of the Wabash Soccer Classic at Mud Hollow Field. The victory also marks the first win at Wabash for first-year head coach George Perry.

The Little Giants bounced back from a 3-2 loss to a tough Kalamazoo squad in the season-opener on Saturday. Wabash forced the action several times, leading at halftime in shots 11-5. The lone Little Giant goal came in the final minute of the first half when Momodou Jagne (Banjul, Gamia/Gambia) picked up a ball in front of the left post of the Albion goal and dribbled to the right side. His shot arced past the Briton’s goalkeeper and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

While sophomore goalkeeper Graham Bailey (Evansville, IN/Evansville North) scored his first shutout of the season and second of his career, the Little Giants kept up the pace. Wabash had three more opportunities to score in the contest, but were unable to convert. Jagne had a shot sail past the goalie but just hit off of the crossbar, Carlos Aguirre (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) fired a shot at the right post that the Briton goalie was just able to knock away before scoring, and Ben Robinson (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) had a shot hit off the goalie and almost bounce into the net before Albion was able to make the save. Bailey faced seven shots on goal by the Britons, turning each one away from the net.

“I was pleased with our improvement,” said Perry. “I see our players trying to work within the offensive and defensive structure that is in place. We did a better job going after some balls today. I’ll continue to be happy if I see that type of improvement each game.”

The Little Giants will travel to Anderson on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.
