Jagne Sets Record In Triple Jump As Wabash Takes Second At Conference Meet

The Little Giant track and field team grabbed a second-place finish at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Meet held over the weekend at Ohio Wesleyan University. Wabash finished with 140 points, trailing only Ohio Wesleyan in first place with 172.5 points. The College of Wooster finished third with 101 points.

Two Wabash athletes earned individual honors as Modu Jagne (Banjul, Gambia) and Brent Bridwell (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) captured first-place finishes in their events. Jagne qualified for the finals in the triple jump with a leap of 46' 5" on Saturday morning. In the final round he shattered the NCAC record in the event and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet May 25-27 by jumping 48' 11 1/4". Jagne set the record on his final jump of the competition, despite injuring his heel on the attempt. Jagne also took seventh in the 200 meter dash, and was third in the long jump. Bridwell took first place in the high jump by clearing 6' 6", just missing the provisional qualifying mark for the national championship meet. His jump bettered that of the defending conference champion, who Bridwell also defeated in the NCAC Indoor Championship meet.

Several other Wabash athletes showed their top form at the conference finals. Jon Haug (Frankfort, IN/Clinton Prairie), who had already participated at the decathlon one week earlier with a second-place finish. Haug took second in the 110 meter hurdles, second in the 400 meter hurdles, and was ninth in the javelin throw. Marshall Davis (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) and John Crumpacker (Crawfordsville, IN/Ben Davis) took sixth and seventh in the javelin event, and were part of the three-man team that scored in the pole vault. Davis took third in the pole vault, clearing 14' 2". Crumpacker was sixth after clearing 13' 4 1/4", and Shawn Spear (Haubstadt, IN) completed the group effort with a seventh-place finish.

The Little Giant distance runners also performed well, as Mike Vega (Lake Station, IN/Edison), Greg Augspurger (Louisville, KY/Castle), and Kyle Hall (Louisville, IN/Seneca) finished in the top eight in the 5,000 meters to score team points for Wabash. Vega took third place with a time of 15:45.73, Augspurger was fourth (15:48.73), while Hall took eighth place by finishing in 16:08.55. Augspurger and Hall added top-five finishes in the 10,000 meters as Augspurger completed the circuit in 33:18.95 and Hall took fifth (36:48.82).

"Our athletes rose to the challenge," said coach Rob Johnson. "They performed just like Wabash men are expected to perform. We battled against injuries and against a very tough field of competitors."

Other top performers for Wabash included Darren Green (Dallas, TX) with a third place in the 400 meter run, Antoine Carpenter (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) took sixth in the 100 meter dash, and Matt Mercer (Carmel, IN/Carmel) with an eighth place in the shot put.
