Second-Half Attack Not Enough For Wabash in 4-1 Loss to DePauw

Despite an explosive start to the second half that saw the Wabash soccer team pepper the goal with shots, the Little Giants could not draw even and lost a 4-1 match to DePauw University on Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing 2-1 at the half after freshman Aaron Kunkle (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) slammed a shot of the left post in the 44th minute, the Little Giants poured on the attack in the opening minutes of the second half. It appeared that junior defenseman Cody Lawson (Carmel, IN/Carmel) had tied the game when he blasted a shot past the DePauw goalkeeper, only to hit the right post and have the ball bound away from the front of the box. One minute later it was Kunkle in front of the box again. He fired a shot over the goalie, only to see it strike the crossbar. Kunkle led the team in shots on goal with two scoring attempts. The Little Giants managed seven shots on goal in the game.

DePauw, ranked 21st in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III poll, took advantage of the missed opportunities by Wabash, scoring two goals in the second half to secure the 4-1 victory.

Freshman goalie Will McAdams (Carmel, IN/Carmel) suffered the loss, his first of the season as Wabash fell to 4-2. He stopped seven shots in 90 minutes for the Little Giants.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Little Giants. Wabash will open its North Coast Athletic Conference portion of the season on Saturday afternoon. Ohio Wesleyan will visit Mud Hollow Field on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match. The Battling Bishops are 7-0 and are ranked third in the nation in the latest poll.
