Harriers Take Third at Hokum Karem

The Wabash College cross country team opened the 2002 season with a third place finish in the 41st Wabash Hokum Karem on Saturday.

The Little Giants finished with 32 points, trailing DePauw University with a first-place total of 11 points and the Univ. of Indianapolis (2nd place, 13 points). Marian College (37 points), Millikin (39 points), IU Southeast (48 points) rounded out the top six places. Rose-Hulman and Danville Area Community College tied for seventh (50 points).

Senior Mark Sherer (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) and junior Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton) combined in the relay-style race to take fourth place with a time of 29:49. Runners work together in pairs, with the first runner racing for a mile, then handing a baton to his teammate. The second runner runs another mile, then hands the baton back to the first runner. This exchange continues until both runners have run three miles. The women run two one-mile loops in the same fashion.

Junior Dan Sweet (West Bloomfield, MI/Culver Military Academy) and freshman Ethan Paul (Evansville, IN/Evansville Memorial) finished 16th (32:02), and freshmen Joe Moore (Beech Grove, IN/Beech Grove) and Peter Fenimore (Bexley, OH/Bexley) took 21st place (33:22).

Wabash will travel to Gambier, Ohio next Saturday to participate in the Great Lakes Colleges Association Invitational. Kenyon College will serve as the host institution for the men's and women's races. The men's race begins at 10 a.m.
