Two First-Half Goals Lead to 4-1 Win For Soccer Team

Wabash evened its season record to 1-1 with a 4-1 victory over Albion College in the second day of the DePauw Soccer Classic.

The Little Giants dominated the first 45 minutes offensively, outshooting the Britons 13-3 and putting two goals on the scoreboard. With the ball in its offensive end of the pitch in the early going, Wabash put the first point on the scoreboard with a goal from senior forward Carlos Aguirre (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis). Aguirre took a pass from Chris Doty (Longwood, FL/Trinity Prep School of Florida) and Morgan Patchell (Kalamazoo, IN/Loy Norrix) and blasted the shot into the top left corner of the goal to put the Little Giants in front to stay.

Four minutes later, freshman forward Chase Lamm (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) (Photo right) scored his second goal of the season and the eventual game winner on a ball that deflected off of the Albion goalie. Lamm chased the ball down in the mouth of the goal and drilled it home to give the Little Giants a 2-0 lead.

Wabash continued to pressure the Britons in the second half while adding two more goals in the final 45 minutes. Freshman Aaron Kunkle (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) scored his first goal in the 83rd minute to put Wabash in front 3-0. Sophomore Jimmy Angelov (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) made it 4-0 just over a minute later, taking a pass from Kunkle to score the final goal for the Little Giants. Albion scored a late goal off of a deflected shot to end the Wabash shutout bid.

Patchell finished the game with two assists for the game, adding a pass on the goal by Kunkle. Goalies John Taggert (Carmel, IN/Hampton Roads Academy) and Will McAdams (Carmel, IN/Carmel) combined to turn aside ten Albion shots to earn the win. Taggert had one save while McAdams made nine saves in 45 minutes for Wabash.

“We played a good half of soccer to open today’s game,” said head coach George Perry. “Combined with the good effort in the second half of Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Kalamazoo we’ve played one good game. We need to work on playing 90 minutes of soccer as a team. But I’m very pleased with effort at the start of today’s match.”

Wabash will travel to Decatur, Illinois on Wednesday to play a 7 p.m. match against Millikin University.
