Wabash Wins Weather War against Earlham

Wabash sophomore Josh Bronaugh (Crawfordsville, IN/North Montgomery) scored two touchdowns, including a 71-yard strike in the third quarter, to help Wabash to a 41-7 win over Earlham on Saturday.

Bronaugh had six receptions for a career-high 144 yards to pace the Wabash receivers. Quarterback Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) completed 21 of 32 passes for 302 yards and two TDs.

The Wabash defense was the big story on Saturday. The Little Giants held Earlham to negative yards on the first three series of the game, forcing an interception after taking a 7-0 lead on the first Knott-to-Bronaugh scoring strike. After the pick the Wabash offense marched 65 yards in 10 plays to score on a Knott two-yard run to go in front 14-0. Knott added 20 rushing yards to his passing numbers to finish with 322 total yards of offense.

After Wabash took a 21-0 lead on a Nick Dawson (LaFontaine, IN/Wabash Southwood) four-yard run, the Little Giant special teams made their presence known. Wabash sophomore Nick Fanelli (Crown Point, IN/Lake Central) blocked an Earlham punt on the first drive of the second quarter. Sophomore Kyle Havlik (Middlebury, IN/Northridge) scored the first touchdown of his Wabash career when he scooped up the loose ball at the Earlham seven yard line and ran into the endzone to put the Little Giants in front 28-0.

Knott added a second TD run with 11 seconds remaining in the first half, then added the 71-yard pass to Bronaugh in the third. Knott found the sophomore receiver at the line of scrimmage after avoiding the Earlham defensive pressure. Bronaugh did the rest, weaving through traffic at midfield before sprinting down the sidelines for the score.

Wabash kicker Olmy Olmstead (Alexandria, OH/Granville) kicked well in the muck and mud that had gathered on the field due to heavy rains throughout the game. The sophomore kicker hit five extra points before his string of 37 consecutive extra points came to an end with a missed kick after the Bronaugh score. Earlham managed a touchdown in the final minute of the game to erase the shutout, but Wabash came away with the 41-7 win.

Wabash finished with 408 yards of total offense (106 rushing, 302 passing) while holding Earlham to 160 yards (-10 rushing, 170 passing). The Quakers were held to 56 yards in the first half by the Wabash defense.

Wabash moves to 4-2, 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with the win. Earlham falls to 2-4, 1-2 in the NCAC.

The Little Giants will play their final home game of the season next Saturday against Hiram College. Kickoff at Byron P. Hollett Little Giant Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. (EST).
