Morris Leads Offense to Big Day, Win

Sophomore running back Chris Morris (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) scored three times and rushed for a career-best 161 yards as Wabash defeated Oberlin College 56-26 in North Coast Athletic Conference football on Saturday.

Morris put the Little Giants on the scoreboard with 7:45 remaining in the first quarter with a 19-yard TD run to cap a 7-play, 63-yard drive just one week after the Wabash offense failed to score a single touchdown against Wittenberg. The sophomore added his second touchdown less than three minutes later, this time scoring from 16 yards. It marked the first time in Morris' career that he had scored more than one touchdown in a game.

After an Oberlin score cut the Wabash lead to seven, the Little Giants responded with a touchdown pass from Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) to Ryan Short (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) of 11 yards. The TD reception was the 19th of Short's career, moving him into a tie with Tony Altavilla ’85 for third on the Wabash career touchdown reception list. Another touchdown run by Morris to answer an Oberlin score put the Little Giants in front 28-14. Wabash put two more scores on the board with a one-yard run by Val Benoit (LaJoya, TX/LaJoya) and a six-yard run by David Sutherland (Champaign, IL/Centennial) to take a 42-14 advantage.

Just when it looked like Wabash would take that lead into halftime, junior linebacker Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) scooped up a fumble and rambled 23 yards to score his first career touchdown and give the Little Giants a 49-14 halftime advantage.

Knott added a second-half touchdown pass to senior receiver Kurt Casper (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) to move Casper into a three-way tie with Short and Altavilla on the career touchdown reception list with 19 TD catches.

Turnovers had plagued the Little Giants in the first three games, but the Wabash defense turned the tables on Oberlin. Artie Montes (Mission, TX/Mission), Connor Kuba (Westfield, IN/Westfield-Washington), Terence Nance (Dallas, TX/J.J. Pearce), and Dustin Deno (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) had an interception each as the Little Giants picked off the Yeomen quarterbacks four times in the game. Montes and Nick Fanelli (Crown Point, IN/Lake Central) had fumble recoveries in addition to the fumble return for a touchdown by Stanton. The Little Giants won the turnover battle by forcing seven Oberlin turnovers while committing two on an interception and a fumble.

In addition to the offensive efforts of Morris, Knott threw for 262 yards (14-of-21) with two touchdowns and one interception. Short was once again the leading receiver for the Little Giants with seven catches for 103 yards.

Wabash (2-2, 1-1) will return to Byron P. Hollett Little Giant Stadium on Saturday, October 6, for a Homecoming game against the College of Wooster. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
