Strong Second Half Not Enough For Wabash Soccer

The second half was the best half of soccer for Wabash this season, but it was not quite enough to get a win as DePauw defeated the Little Giants 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Wabash trailed throughout much of the match after allowing a goal in the six-minute mark to trail 1-0. That was the difference at halftime before Wabash went on the attack.

The Little Giants outshot the Tigers 11-10 in the second half, forcing DePauw's goalie to make six saves after making only one in the first half. Wabash found the back of the net in the 72nd minute when senior Todd Brown (Hammond, IN/Hammond) broke free from the defense and passed the ball ahead to junior Carlos Aguirre (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis). Aguirre found junior Adam Reisig (Kansas City, MO/Baker College) in front of the goal and flicked the ball ahead. Reisig, who had a shot bounce off the far post in the first half, pounded the shot home to tie the match at 1-1 with 18 minutes remaining.

Wabash nearly scored on two other occasions, but DePauw took the victory with a deflected goal in the 87th minute.

"This is the best 70 to 75 minutes of soccer that I've seen this team play," said coach George Perry. "We made good runs, we played strong defense, we did the things that good soccer teams do. We played the best game of soccer that I've seen a Wabash team play in the year-and-a-half that I've been here. Even though we didn't come up with the win, I'm extremely pleased with effort."

Reisig's goal, his second of the season, was his only official shot on goal. He and Aguirre led the Little Giants in shot attempts, accounting for nine of the 17 Little Giant shots.

Wabash (2-3) will return to Mud Hollow Field on Saturday to begin North Coast Athletic Conference play. The Little Giants will play Kenyon at 1 p.m.
