Eighth Inning Run Gives Wabash Sweep Over Earlham

An unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Wabash baseball team a 1-0 victory on Sunday against Earlham College, and a 3-0 weekend sweep of the Quakers.

With both teams held in check through 7-1/2 innings, the Little Giants battled for a run in the eighth inning when Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) came home on a Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) line drive to left. The ball skipped off the glove of the Earlham outfielder, allowing Martin to score easily and give Wabash the 1-0 lead.

Martin earned the victory on the mound for Wabash as threw the complete-game shutout, stiking out nine and scattering seven hits throughout his nine innings of work. Martin finished 2-for-2 from the plate to lead Wabash offensively as well.

The Little Giants shut out Earlham in the three-game series, the first time a Wabash baseball team has recorded three consecutive shutouts since the 1909 season. The last time the Little Giants shut out an opponent in a series was in 1992 when Wabash defeated Webster 10-0 in back-to-back games.

The Little Giants move to 11-24 with the win, 4-8 in the Western Division of the North Coast Athletic Conference.
