Little Giants Sluggers Split with Chowan

Wabash looked to rebound in a doubleheader against Chowan College after suffering two tough losses on Tuesday. Rebound it did as a great pitching performance by Mark Rowe and clutch hitting gave the Little Giants a 9-0 victory in game one. Wabash battled back in game two, but fell short in a 6-3 loss to move to 3-3 for the year.

Rowe got the start in game one for the Little Giants, the first start of his career. After throwing two innings in relief on Saturday, Rowe was masterful on the mound, holding Chowan to three hits and two walks while striking out six in the seven inning performance. The sophomore hurler got great support, as the Little Giants had came ready to hit.

Wabash opened with a run in the first when Matt Carlson tripled, then scored on a single by Josh Stanton. Three more runs came in the third inning, started once by Carlson. The Wabash shortstop signled and stole second, then came home on another Stanton single. Stanton came home one batter later, scoring on a rifle-shot to right-center by Jake Knott. Scott Shinkan followed Knott's double with an RBI single, giving the Little Giants a 4-0 lead. A run in the fourth, followed by two in the fifth and two more in the sixth secured the Wabash victory for Rowe.

The Little Giants took a 1-0 lead in the second game, as Carlson led off with a single and scored on a single by Brandon Candiano Chowan answered with a run in the second before Stanton's hot bat put the Little Giants in front again.

The sophomore crushed a pitch with two out in the third inning over the centerfield fence for his first homerun of the season, the third for the Little Giants this year. The solo shot put Wabash back in front 2-1. But Chowan came back again, this time scoring a single run in the fourth to once again tie the game.

The Braves exploded in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to take a 6-2 lead. Wabash came back in the top of the seventh with a run by freshman Josh Bronaugh and had the tying run at the plate with only one out, but could not get any additional runs across the plate. Ben Prickel took the loss for the Little Giants in his first start of the season.

"I'm pleased with our results today," said coach Tom Flynn. "Chowan is a very good baseball team that plays a very good schedule every year. They've already played some quality teams this season. For us to win the first game and be in the second game the whole way shows the results of the hard work our players have put in this year."

The 3-3 Little Giants will play one game on Thursday, a makeup game from the Sunday rainouts against Clarke College at 7 p.m.
