Many Heroes for Wabash in First Two Wins of the Year

Momentum was definately in the Wabash dugout on Saturday. It started with Phil McCaulay, moved to Brandon Candiano, and stayed with pitcher Jake Martin most of the day before settling on Matt Carlson in the final at bat of the game. All four players made great plays to give Wabash a 7-6 win in nine innings over Shenandoah to earn the first victory of the season, and the first in the Wabash career of head coach Tom Flynn.

Trailing a Shenandoah team that won 30 games last season by a 4-2 score, McCauley cut into the lead with his first homerun of the season. The solo shot made it 4-3 before the Hornets rallied for a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. Wabash answered with a run in the sixth, then tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Candiano to score Carlson after he reached on a ground-rule double.

The score remained tied until Carlson came to the plate with two outs and two strikes. The sophomore shortstop launched the next pitch into centerfield for his first career homer at Wabash and the game-winning run.

Martin threw all nine innings for Wabash to earn his first win of the season after throwing 137 pitches. He finished the game allowing eight hits and four earned runs. He struck out four while walking only one batter.

The Little Giants took the nightcap with a 14-7 win over Domincan University of Illinois. Scott Adams earned the win for Wabash with five innings of work. McCaulay launched his second home run of the season.

The Little Giants continue their Florida trip with two games on Sunday before taking Monday off to prepare for the rest of the weekend.

The Little Giants are 2-0 on the season. The team had two games scheduled for Sunday, but they were postponed due to rain. No makeup time has been scheduled at this time.
