Wabash Tankers Third After First Day at Conference Championship

The Wabash College swimming and diving team is in third place at the conclusion of the first day of events at the 17th Annual North Coast Athletic Conference Championships.

Wabash finished with 281 points after the first six events in the men's portion of the meet were completed on Thursday. Kenyon, the defending conference and winner of 21 consecutive national championships, is in first place with 476.5 points. Denison, runner-up the past two seasons in the conference and the NCAA championship meet, is second with 414.5 points. Wittenberg is fourth with 256 points, Allegheny is fifth (219 points), and Wooster is in sixth place (188 points). Ohio Wesleyan (178 points), Oberlin (118 points), and Hiram (72 points) round out the team results.

Sophomore diver Nick Roersma (Grand Rapids, MI/Northview) (photo) earned All-Conference honors with a third-place finish in the one-meter diving event. Roersma finished with 361.35 points in the diving finals. Jacob Goldstein (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) took fifth with 328.85 points in the finals, while Aaron Childress (Hanover, IN/Southwestern) was sixth (276.95 points).

Other top performers for the Little Giants in the water included the 200-yard freestyle relay team, taking fifth in the finals with a time of 1:27.39, the best time of the season for the Wabash team. Nick Collins (Michigantown, IN/Clinton Central) took 12th place in the 500 free (4:51.03), just ahead of teammates Gary Mineart (Noblesville, IN/Noblesville), who finished 13th (4:51.85), and Sean Gallagher (Lawrence, KS/Freestate) in 14th place (4:53.33). Collins reached the finals with a season-best time of 4:50.95 in the preliminary round. Jon-Myckle Price (Logansport, IN/Logansport) took 13th in the 200 individual medley with a season-best time of 2:00.87, along with a 16th-place finish by Craig Haupert (Cedar Lake, IN/Lowell) (2:02.24).

Sophomore Ben Long (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) continued the trend of top times for the year with a 14th-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.79. His time of 21.68 in the prelims set the top mark for the season. Junior R.J. Morgan (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) was 16th (22.09). Wabash also took fifth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:36.69.

The NCAC Championships continue through Saturday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, OH.
