Three-Pointers Put Wabash Away

Wabash ran into a three-point buzzsaw on Wednesday night at the Wittenberg Tigers set nearly ever record in the book on the way to 97-73 victory.

The Tigers hit 19 three-pointers in the contest, setting Wittenberg, North Coast Athletic Conference, and Wabash opponent records for treys in a game. The three-point barrage gave the Tigers a 22-point lead in the first half before Wabash whittled it to 13 at halftime. After taking another 22-point lead, the Little Giants cut the Wittenberg advantage to only nine points with 15 minutes remaining in the game when Brady Claxton (Shelbyville, IN/Shelbyville) (photo) hit a three of his own from the right side.

It only made the Tigers mad as Wittenberg went on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach.

Wabash shot 42-percent from the field, hitting 25-of-60 shots, including five three-pointers, but couldn’t stop the Wittenberg attack. The Tigers connected on 58-percent of their shots from the field, and hit 63-percent from behind the three-point arc on 19-of-30 shooting.

"We didn’t come ready to play physically or mentally," said Wabash coach Mac Petty. "When we did play hard in the second half, we spent all of our energy cutting the lead to nine, then didn’t have anything left down the stretch."

Joe DesJean (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) led the Little Giants in scoring with 16 points. The sophomore forward grabbed seven rebounds and had one blocked shot. Pleas Ferguson (Indianapolis, IN/Arsenal Tech) added 15 points, while Matt Storm (Anderson, IN/Lapel) and Claxton each had 10.

Wabash falls below the .500-mark with the loss at 10-11. The Little Giants are 8-5 in the NCAC, and play Oberlin on Saturday at Chadwick Court. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
