Freeman, Trebley Earn District Academic All-American Honors

Seniors Ryan Freeman (Delphi, IN/Delphi) and Joe Trebley (Glenwood, IN/Rushville) were named to the Verizon Academic All-American District V team on Thursday.

Freeman, a starting linebacker for the Little Giants, was named to the First Team Academic All-District Team. He is an economics major and Presidential and Leadership Scholar at Wabash. He has started all nine games for Wabash, recording 30 solo tackles and 27 assists this season. Freeman has also made four sacks for 21 yards and has 11 tackles for losses totaling 42 yards. The senior co-captain has a fumble recovery this season and has two pass breakups.

After starting his Wabash football career as a defensive back, Freeman moved to linebacker as a junior, and was a Second Team All-Conference selection in 1999 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. He earned North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the week honors after making 11 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks against Wooster on October 7. Freeman has also been honored by the Wrestling Coaches Association as an All-Academic selection the past two seasons.

Freeman is the son of Tom and Susan Freeman of Lafayette, IN. His father is a 1970 graduate of Wabash.

Trebley, a starting defensive end for Wabash, earned Second Team Academic All-District V honors. Trebley has been a regular starter on defense for the Little Giants for two seasons, playing in all nine games this year. He has 20 tackles, three tackles for losses, and two sacks for six yards. Trebley is a chemistry major and Lilly Scholar, and spent last summer as an intern at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The Institute is part of the Harvard Medical School and is recognized as one of the leading cancer research centers in the world.

Trebley is the son of Jim and Jeannie Trebley of Glenwood, IN.

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Verizon Academic All-America teams in 10 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, fall/winter men’s at-large, fall/winter women’s at-large, spring men’s at-large and spring women’s at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III, and NAIA) Divisions. Football consists of just first and second teams.
