Little Giants Win Opening Dual Meet Against Chicago

The Wabash swimming and diving team opened the dual meet portion of the 2000-2001 season with a 156-33 victory over the University of Chicago on Friday evening.

The Little Giants opened the meet with a victory in the 400 medley relay. R.J. Morgan, Jon-Myckle Price, Ben Long, and Craig Haupert combined for first place with a time of 3:47.41. Nick Collins followed with a first-place finish in the 1000 free, finishing in 10:42.70. Morgan added a first in the 50 free with a time of 22.11.

Wabash took the top three places in the 200 IM, the 500 freestyle, and the one-meter diving events. In the 200 IM, Dean Fox grabbed first with a time of 2:06.22, followed by Haupert in second (2:06.51) and Jon-Myckle Price in third (2:07.12). Gary Mineart took first in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.99. Freshman Brett Findley and Sean Gallagher took third. Sophomore Nick Roersma took first in the one-meter event with 210.3 points, with Aaron Childress capturing second and newcomer Jeremy Morris taking third. Roersma followed with a first-place finish in the 3-meter event with 247.75 points.

Senior Paul Meyer took first in the 200 butterfly, finishing in 2:07.97. Freshman Noah Hopkins finished in 49.97 to take first in the 100 free just ahead of Long in second place. Price came from behind to take first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:18.58, while Haupert cut eight seconds from his lifetime best time in the event with a finishing time of 2:19.71 for a second-place finish.

Wabash ended with a 1-2 finish in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. Dan Burleigh, Brandon Peacock, Long, and Findley took first, finishing in 3:25.00. Jon DeSmet, Collins, Mineart, and Fox grabbed second place after finishing in 3:29.6.

"I'm very please with our times, and I'm particularly please with the performance of our divers," said coach Gail Pebworth. "While Chicago did not have a great deal of team depth, they certainly provided us with some great individual competition. This was a good way to get the season underway."

The Little Giants return to the water on Tuesday, traveling to Rose-Hulman for a 7 p.m. meet.
