Description: In this course, we will discuss texts that challenge definitions of national belonging, often tied with race and traditional gender norms and sexualities. We will explore gender-nonconforming characters in the fiction of Jean Toomer, Bessie Head, Zoë Wicomb, David Diopp, and others, as well as white supremacy and nationalisms around the globe. Students may enroll without prerequisites if they contact the professor in advance.
