Was the U.S. established as a Christian nation? A secular nation? Something else? This seminar will delve into these critical questions that have animated American history and continue to impact our collective cultural, social, and political life. We will examine the history of Christianity in colonial America and the new nation, with particular focus on the Revolutionary War, the development of the Constitution, and its implementation in the early republic. Relevant topics include religious pluralism, freedom of religion, disestablishment, and religion in public life. |
