Wabash Remembers 9/11

Crawfordsville, IN —On the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Wabash College students, faculty, and staff gathered beneath a flag lowered to half-staff to remember those lost in the devastation, to pray for consolation for those afflicted by the tragedies, and to give thanks for "strength that allowed us to rise above the ashes."

Students rose early for a solemn flag raising ceremony and then came together at 10 a.m. for a gathering led by Student Senate President Brian Lawlor ’03 that included prayers from Ali Ahmed ’04 of the Muslim Students Association and Kip Chase ’03 of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

"I don’t know what more can be said of 9/11 and its aftermath," Wabash President Andy Ford told those gathered. "I would simply ask a question: Do you have a mother, father, brother, sister, or a friend who woke up this morning and had to decide whether or not to go to work, because it might not be safe? How their world has changed.

"Ours has not. I suspect that none of us on campus were concerned for our safety coming here this morning. That underlines the importance of what you are doing, which is getting an education. For it is only through education that we can ultimately have world peace."

Lawlor invited the community to a Chapel service to pray for peace following the ceremony, then concluded by reading the inscription for a plaque commemorating the day that will be placed next to the flag pole:

"On the anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Wabash student body honors those who were lost. Our generation is forever changed, and in your memory we strive to live humanely for a world without fear. Long shall we sing thy praises."
