Martin's Complete Game Win Gives Wabash a Split with Denison

Junior Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) threw his first complete game of the season while earning his second win on the mound in a 3-2 Wabash victory, ending an eight-game losing streak for the Little Giants. Denison took a 9-3 victory in the first game of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wabash College on Saturday afternoon.

Martin scattered seven hits, allowing two earned runs including a balk call with runners on first and third to bring home the first Denison run of the game. He also walked in a run in the sixth as Denison cut the Wabash lead to one run in the top half of the inning. Martin struck out three while walking only two.

The Little Giants jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) opened the inning with a double to center field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson). Junior Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) made it a 2-0 game by crushing an offering from Denison's Tom Puffenberger over the left-center field wall for his second home run of the season. Wabash tacked on the game-winning run in the fifth on a Bryson Renbarger (Converse, IN/Eastern) single and a Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration) double to center.

Denison took advantage of two Wabash errors to open the first contest, scoring two unearned runs in the inning to take the early lead. The Big Red added a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Pat Baumann to bring home Brian Regan. Denison added three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 9-0 lead before Wabash answered with three in the bottom half of the sixth inning.

Denison moves to 18-8 with the split, 5-3 in the NCAC's Western Division. Wabash is 13-19, 1-5 in the NCAC West. The 13 victories ties the number of wins for the Little Giants last season. The two teams will meet in the final game of the three-game series at noon (EST) on Sunday afternoon.
