Wabash Loses Slugfest to Mount St. Joseph

Twelve runs on 17 hits were not quite enough for the Wabash baseball team on Sunday evening as the Little Giants lost to Mount St. Joseph 19-12 in Florida.

The Little Giants fell behind when Mount St. Joseph put six runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Wabash battled back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, only to see the Lions answer with two in the fourth.

Wabash took a 10-8 lead in the bottom of the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate in the inning. Senior co-captain Bryson Renbarger (Converse, IN/Eastern) smacked two doubles in the inning, scoring the first of the seven runs to begin the inning and knocking in two more runs in the frame with the second double. Renbarger went 3-for-4 in the game.

The seven spot in the fourth only gave the Little Giants the lead for a few minutes. Mount St. Joseph scored two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game, then added five runs in the sixth, solo runs in the seventh and ninth, and two runs in the eighth. Wabash added two runs in the seventh on a single by freshman shortstop Joe Motuliak (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) and a double by freshman third baseman Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke), but lost a chance to get any closer when Motuliak was called out on a close play at the plate on the Martin two-base hit.

Junior outfielder Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) was 4-for-5 in the game with two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman second baseman Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) added three hits, including a double, with an RBI and three runs scored.

Wabash falls to 2-5 overall with the loss and 1-3 over spring break. The Little Giants return to the diamond on Monday morning at 11 a.m.
