Little Giants Earn Split in Opener in Florida

The Wabash baseball team split its first two games of its annual Florida trip, taking a 2-1 victory over Malone College Saturday morning before losing a 4-3 to Worcester State Saturday night.

Little Giant freshmen pitchers Jon Horne (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) and Jim Sink (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) dominated in their outing against Malone. Horne earned his first career victory at Wabash by striking out nine batters while scattering eight hits and allowing only one earned run in 6-2/3 innings. Sink came on in relief in the bottom of the seventh to strike out the final Malone College batter of the game to earn his first career save as a Little Giant.

Freshman second baseman Jason Jablonski (Poland, OH/Cardinal Mooney) led the Little Giants on offense, going 2-for-3 while scoring the winning run for Wabash. Jablonski raced home on a Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) doulbe in the sixth inning to give Wabash a 2-0 lead. Malone scored one run in the seventh and had runners on second and third when Sink got the final strikeout of the game.

Errors plagued the Little Giants in the second game on Saturday night against Worcester State. Wabash tied the game at 2-2 in the second inning after Worcester State plated two runs in the first inning on an error and a wild pitch. Three of the four Worcester State runs were unearned as the Little Giants committed four errors in the contest. Starting pitcher Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) gave up five hits in five innings, striking out five with no walks. He also helped his cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Junior catcher Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) was 2-for-4 in the game, as well.

Wabash is 2-3 for the year. The Little Giants will face Ferrum College on Sunday in Fort Myers, Florida.
