Little Giants Squander Lead, Lose to Earlham

The Wabash basketball team saw a five-point lead disappear on Wednesday night as the Earlham Quakers outscored Wabash 12-2 in the final 2-1/2 minutes of the game to hand the Little Giants a 68-63 loss.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak by Wabash and a three-game losing streak by Earlham.

The Little Giants trailed by 12 points early in the contest and by two points at halftime before getting the offense untracked. After watching the Quakers move ahead by five to open the second half of play, Wabash answered with a 20-7 run to take a 54-46 lead.

The Little Giants would not be able to hold onto the lead, however. After taking a 61-56 lead with 2:36 remaining in the contest, Earlham held Wabash to only one basket from the field for the remainder of the contest, a drive by freshman Jim Sink (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) with 1:16 remaining to give the Little Giants a two point lead.

The lead lasted less than a minute as Nathan Stoops canned a three-pointer from the top of the key to put the Quakers in front to stay. Two turnovers by Wabash and free throws by Earlham's Travis Brett gave Wabash its fifth loss in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

Brady Claxton (Shelbyville, IN/Shelbyville) led Wabash in scoring with 23 points. Junior Joe DesJean (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) recorded his tenth double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Earlham's Brady Keaton, who was held to one point in the first meeting between the the two schools, led the Quakers with 21 points. Stoops added 16 points.

Wabash falls to 11-10 with the loss, 8-5 in the NCAC. The Little Giants remain in third place in the conference standings as Ohio Wesleyan, the fourth place team in the conference, lost a 67-64 decision to Wittenberg. The Little Giants travel to Wooster on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
