First Indoor Track Meet at Wabash College Ends with Success for DeYoung, Sherer, Relay Team

Wabash College officially joined the indoor track and field society on Saturday, hosting the first Wabash Indoor Track and Field Invitational. The Invitational was the first varsity competition held in the new Knowling Fieldhouse.

Junior Peter DeYoung (Evansville, IN/Evansville Bosse) took advantage of the familiar home surroundings, taking first place in the triple jump with a leap of 42-10. He also captured first place in the high jump, clearing 6-4.

Junior Mark Sherer (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) took first place in the 1500-meter run, finishing just ahead of sophomore Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton). Sherer finished in 4:08.38, just nipping Ruge at the line by .13 seconds (4:08.51).

The 4 X 200 relay team of Joe Bombagetti (Crown Point, IN/Crown Point), Ken Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran), Jerome Murray (Lawton, OK/Eisenhower), and Darren Green (Dallas, TX/South Texas HS for Health Professions) raced to the finish ahead of the competition to take first place with a time of 1:33.81.

Green added an individual second-place finish in the 200-meter run (23.24) and a third in the 55-meter dash (6.62). Junior John Crumpacker (Crawfordsville, IN/Ben Davis) was second in the pole vault (13 feet).

Senior Jared Smit (Lafayette, IN/Central Catholic) took second in the 3000-meter run (8:56.55). Junior Caleb Ishman (Gary, IN/Emerson Visual and Performing Arts) opened the competition with a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, then followed up with solid third-place finish in the weight throw (45' 2-1/2").

Ten teams competed in the Invitational, which was not scored as a team competition.
