Little Giant Tankers Take Second at DePauw

Wabash College placed second of ten teams in the 2001 DePauw Invitational Swimming Meet held in Greencastle Friday-Saturday. The Little Giants scored 731.5 points to place second to Washington University (St. Louis), finishing the two-day meet with 852 points. Host DePauw was third with 587.5 points, followed by Wittenberg (345), Rose-Hulman (387), Alma (267), Principia (161), Illinois Wesleyan (146), Millikin (137), and Olivet (46).

All 18 Wabash swimmers scored in the meet and season best times were recorded by Little Giants in every event.

Freshman Brad Williams (Columbus, IN/Columbus North)was top individual scorer for Wabash with 49 points, placing second in the 500 freestyle (4:48.93), second in the 1650 free (16:46.12) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:47.49). Freshman Colin Fahey (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) scored 46 points by placing second in the 100 breaststroke (59.58), fourth in the 50 free (21.94), and fifth in the 200 breast(2:15.38).

Sophomore Brett Findley (Bargersville, IN/Franklin Community)and senior captain Jon-Myckle Price (Logansport, IN/Logansport)were just one point behind with 45. Findley was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.07 and also placed sixth in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 100 backstroke. Price was third in the 100 breaststroke (2:13.98), and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:01.99)

Junior captain Nick Collins (Michigantown, IN/Clinton Central)scored 43 points placing second in the 400 individual medley (4:18.41).

Sophomore Brandon Peacock (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville)earned 42 points placing second in the 100 freestyle (48.04), third in the 100 butterfly (53.35), and won the consolation final of the 50 free(21.99). Freshman Ben Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove)scored 39 with a fourth placed finish in both the 400 individual medley and 200 breaststroke and won the consolation final in the 200 individual medley. One point behind was freshman Zach Sundstrom (Indianapolis, IN/North Central), who placed third in both the 100 back (55.90) and 200 back (1:59.82 in prelims), as well as 11th in the 200 individual medley.

The Little Giants swam season best times in placing second in all five relays. Fahey, Peacock, Williams, and Manker teamed up in the 200 free relay (1:28.70) and 400 free relay (3:15.44.) Sundstrom, Fahey, Findley & Peacock swam 400 medley in 3:38.36. The 200 medley relay with Sundstrom, Fahey, Peacock, and Bernie Manker (Grand Rapids, MI/Northview) was second in 1:38.99. Findley, Collins, Williams, and Manker swam the 800 free relay in 7:20.24.

Wabash will host the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon for a dual meet in the Class of 1950 Natatorium at 2 p.m. in the final competition of the fall semester.
