Wabash Tankers Take Second at NCAC Relays

The Wabash swimming and diving team opened the 2001-02 season with a second-place finish at the North Coast Athletic Conference Relays on Saturday.

Kenyon took first place with 160 points. Wabash was second with 152 points. Denison (128) took third place, while Wittenberg (76), Hiram (66), Allegheny (64), and Ohio Wesleyan (64), Oberlin (48), and Wooster (46) rounded out the scoring in the meet.

The Little Giants place third behind Kenyon and Denison in the eight swimming relays, but the Wabash diving team of Nick Roersma (Grand Rapids, MI/Northview) and Aaron Stump (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) earned first-place finishes in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events, allowing Wabash to move ahead of Denison in the final team tally.

Two school relay records were broken in the race. The 500-yard crescendo relay team of Brandon Peacock (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville), Ben Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove), Nick Collins (Michigantown, IN/Clinton Central), and Brad Williams (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) took six seconds off the old mark, finishing with a time of 4:27.18. Sean Gallagher (Los Angeles, CA/Free State (KS)) teamed with Collins and Williams to earse the Wabash 1500-yard record by finishing with a time of 15:39.41.

Williams, Hewitt, Peacock, and Colin Fahey (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) finished in third place in the 200 medley relay (1:43.26).

Wabash will open the home portion of its season against Rose-Hulman and St. Mary's College in a double-dual meet on Saturday, November 3 at 2 p.m. in the Class of 1950 Natatorium.
