Battle for Possible Tournament Bid Ends with Wabash Loss

Wabash and Wittenberg met on Wednesday night at Mud Hollow Field in Crawfordsville, tied for fifth in the North Coast Athletic Conference and battling for a spot in the NCAC Tournament. Casey Gioielli (Cincinnati, OH/Indian Hill) scored his first goal of the season for Wabash, but it wasn't enough as the Little Giants fell 4-1 to Wittenberg.

Wabash trailed 3-0 after 38 minutes when Gioielli took a corner kick from Jeremy Robinson (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) in front of the Wittenberg goal and pounded the shot home for his first goal of the season. But the Little Giants would get no closer as the Tigers added an insurance goal in the second half to grab the win and move into a fourth place tie in the NCAC standings with Allegheny. The top four teams in the conference standings advance to the NCAC tournament, with the winner of the tournament earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Soccer Tournament.

The game was the final home contest for senior Jeremy Willett (Dyer, IN/Lake Central), who was honored at halftime.

The loss moves Wabash (4-6-2, 2-3-1) into sixth place in the conference standings. Wabash will finish its season on the road with two games in the next two weeks. Sunday the Little Giants travel to Ohio Wesleyan, then close the year at Oberlin on October 27.
