DeYoung Sets School Record in High Jump at Millikin

Wabash sophomore Peter DeYoung (Evansville, IN/Evansville Bosse) cleared 6' 9-1/2" in the the high jump at the Millikin University Big Blue Open on Saturday to break the Wabash College school record and take first place in the event.

DeYoung broke the mark of 6' 8" set by Dave Montieth ’67 in 1967 and tied by Tom Vandergriff ’87 in 1984. The mark also improves DeYoung's chances to participate in the NCAA Championships to be held at Millikin in May. He also added a first-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 42' 4".

Several other Little Giants also took home blue ribbons with first-place finishes on Saturday. Junior Darren Green (Dallas, TX/South Texas HS for Health Professions) took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.24, and was first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.37. Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton) was the winner of the 1,500-meter run, crossing the line in 4:20.01. Jared Smit (Lafayette, IN/Central Catholic) was first in the 5,000-meter run with the winning time of 15:49.64.

Brandon Shipp (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central) finished in 10.03.82 to take first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the field events, John Crumpacker (Crawfordsville, IN/Ben Davis) was first in the pole vault, clearing 14' to earn the win. Matt Mercer (Carmel, IN/Carmel) took first place in the shot put with a winning throw of 46' 4-3/4", and Josh Richey (Michigantown, IN/Clinton Central) took first place in the discus throw with a toss of 137' 9".

The Little Giants will participate in the North Coast Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship Meet at Ohio Wesleyan. The meet begins on Friday, May 4.
