Little Giants Split at Indiana Wesleyan

The Wabash baseball team split a doubleheader at Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Little Giants opened the day with an 8-5 victory in extra innings before falling 16-10 in the second game.

The Little Giants fell behind 3-0 in the first game before scoring a run in the fifth when freshman Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) hit his first career home run. Wabash took a 5-3 lead with a four-run sixth inning. Sophomore catcher Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to centerfield that tied the game at 3-3. Four batters later infielder Matt Carlson (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) laced a bases loaded single to right-center that scored two more Little Giants and gave Wabash the lead.

But the Cougars answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

Wabash loaded the bases once again, and this time it was Brandon Candiano (Dyer, IN/Andrean) that responded. Candiano ripped a two-run single to center field to put Wabash in front 7-5. Knott tallied his third RBI of the game with an insurance run-scoring single put Wabash in front by three runs.

Marc Rowe (West Point, IN/McCutcheon) earned the win in relief of Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville). Rowe threw the last 1-2/3 innings, striking out three while allowing only two hits. Martin went 6-1/3 innings, striking out six.

Game two was an all-out slug fest between the two teams. Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to a 6-0 lead only to see the Little Giants tie the game with six runs of their own in the top of the third inning. But the Cougars scored four in their half of the third, and another four in the fourth on their way to the win.

Martin and Candiano led Wabash in game two as both players finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. Knott added another four RBIs to his day to knock in seven runs total in the two games. He finished 2-for-4 with two doubles.

The Little Giants, 8-20 on the season, return to Mud Hollow Field on Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader against Thomas More College that is set to begin at 1 p.m.
