Wabash Finishes Ohio Trip 3-1

While the weather was cold, the Wabash College baseball team warmed things up with some hot hitting, taking three out of four games at the Denison-Kenyon Baseball Classic in Ohio this weekend. The Little Giants opened with a 20-8 victory over Capital University, then defeated Kenyon 13-4. On Saturday Wabash lost a heartbreaking 3-2 game to Denison before rebounding to defeat Capital 11-9.

On Friday, Wabash pounded out 40 hits in the two victories. Sophomore Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) led the way in game one against Capital, going 5-for-5 with six RBIs in the 12-run Wabash win. Freshman Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) made the most of his first start as a Little Giant, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Wabash scored in each of the first five innings to cruise to the easy victory.

The timely hitting continued in game two against Kenyon as the Little Giants scored 13 runs on 18 hits. Mack, Matt Carlson (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville), and Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) led the way for Wabash. Mack went 3-for-4, adding two more RBIs to his season totals. Carlson went 3-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Martin threw a complete game, allowing one earned run and striking out seven. The sophomore helped his cause at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance.

Saturday saw the Little Giants enter a tight affair with the Denison Big Red at Granville. Wabash jumped in front in the first inning, but Denison answered with two runs in the second. The Little Giants tied the game in the top of the fifth when Carlson scored on a Brandon Candiano (Dyer, IN/Andrean) single. But the Big Red scrapped for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth to get the win. Ben Prickel (Lafayette, IN/Harrison) threw innings, striking out seven while allowing only two earned runs.

Wabash came back in the afternoon game to score five runs in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third against Capital University on the way to the 11-9 win. Stanton was the big hitter again for the Little Giants, going 3-for-4 to hit .556 for the weekend. He had another three RBIs to move his team-leading total to 24. Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) earned his first career victory on the mound for Wabash. Fellow Lafayette area product Marc Rowe (West Point, IN/McCutcheon) continued his stellar season on the mound, throwing three innings of relief to earn his first save of the year. Rowe struck out five while allowing only one hit and one walk in his three innings of work.

Wabash finished the weekend with a 3-1 record after the two games scheduled for Sunday were cancelled due to the cold and wet weather conditions. The Little Giants are 6-8, and will face Franklin College at Mud Hollow Field on Tuesday.
