Battle in Final Event Highlights Day at Wabash Relays

The J. Owen Huntsman Track was the site of the 47th Wabash Relays, held Saturday on the campus of Wabash College. While no team score was kept, the Little Giant relay team in the 4 X 400 provided plenty of excitement in the final event of the day.

The Wabash team of Scott Hoyer, Brandon Shipp, Chris Weitzel, and Darren Green held off charges from DePauw and Vincennes to take first place with a time of 3:26.20 in the last event of the meet.

Wabash captured six first-place finishes overall in the meet. Peter DeYoung helped the Little Giants take two firsts, teaming with Brent Bridwell to take first in the high jump relay with a combined effort of 12 feet. DeYoung and Nathan Klatt took first place in the triple jump relay with combined distance of 78' 8 3/4".

A strong kick at the end gave Wabash freshman Dan Ruge a blue ribbon in the 5000 meters with a first-place time of 16:05.48. Sophomore Kevin Lowry added the final first-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing in 1:01.78.
